In the previous post I laid out my feelings and introduction to this project. Now lets get the nitty gritty details out of the way. I am looking to create a book that is approximately 150 - 200 pages in length. The essential thesis is what lessons have been learned from Columbine. That is it in a nutshell. I am not looking for blank descriptions of the shooting or memorials to friends and family lost. This is not the place for those. I am looking for personal essays. How has Columbine affected your world? How has it affected the world at large? The shooting has led to many changes in school security, law enforcement policies and training, school district disaster scenarios and the handling of tragedies by the media, and the handling of members of the media themselves. I am also looking for lessons on a more philosophical level. Are we more fearful today than we were before? Do we raise children differently? Do we teach them to look over their shoulders? How has the shooting affected the world beyond Littleton? Beyond America?
Submissions should be between 250 - 6000 words. In other words, between 1 and 30 double spaced, typed pages. I will consider anything received for submission, but not everything will be included in the final product. I am setting a submission deadline of one year. So submissions will be closed on August 1, 2009.
Submissions MUST be previously unpublished material. If it has been published in a magazine, book, another blog, a newspaper or in any other fashion, write something new for this.
I will be paying for any submissions that are used in the final product. $5 for anything under 1,000 words, $10 for anything over. Submissions not included in the final product will not be paid for. Since, as of this time, this project is being funded entirely by myself, I will of course accept donated submissions. I will also be willing to trade accepted submissions for contributors copy of the finished book.
At this time I intend to publish this print on demand.
This will be a non-profit venture for myself, and if anyone knows of a quality and related charity to support, please send me the relevant contact information.
I will retain First North American Serial rights to any submission accepted and used.
Thank you,
Art Curtis
